I keep gift cards in my purse, now. They are usually quite gracious about a free meal at Subway or Sonic, even if it's not what they were "really" asking for. I know it'll fill their tummy later.

Helen,

It is dangerous - but no more dangerous than going to the store.

All of the homeless people I have ever met have been incredibly grateful and thankful. I've never experienced any form of threatening behavior from them at all.

That doesn't mean I won't one day meet a homeless person who does not have 'good' things at heart but then I've met store clerks who I've been kind of scared of!

As always, we need to get past our prejudices to be able to see and love people as Jesus does!

Great, honest comment. THANK YOU!

Excellent post. Helen's comment about her cousin seeking them out is also very convicting. There is a much needed wake-up call for all of us. Thank you.

This story is very though provoking! I dread the days when on the freeway offramp I'm approached by one of 'the sign people'. My kids always want to give them money and I'm usually too skeptical to give in. I think I may have to reconsider my feelings after looking at it from such a totally different perspective.
Thank you!

I have a cousin who no matter where she has lived has always sought these people ought in the park and hung out to chat. Sometimes she'll briing them a blanket (we live in Chicago). I always find myself telling her to be careful, and she is always telling me there is no need because these are good people who have fallen on hard times.
It's hard enough to trust people you know and work with, much less strangers. I do admire my cousin for her compassion. I just hope she will be safe.
Your post left me with a lot to think about, Angela.
