Trey Morgan – a Modern Day Hero of the Faith (Part 2)

Today is the second part of a two-part interview with Trey Morgan, one of my ‘Modern Day Heroes of the Faith’. In it, I asked some questions which I hope will give us some insight into how he thinks and how he manages to keep walking out his faith even with all the pressures of the world on him.

If you didn’t see it, check out yesterday’s first half of the interview here.

Trey Morgan Interview Part 2:

In this culture we tend to raise Pastors up on a pedestal and treat them as if they’re better than us in some ways. Is that true? Are pastors somehow better than the rest of us? Does God listen to them more than he listens to other people and talk to them more than he talks to us?

I like this question because I see this all the time. I’m not exactly sure how to stop it from happening, but people need to understand that pastors/ministers are common people who make mistakes and need a Savior just like anyone else. God doesn’t love me any more than he loves the person in prison, the five-time divorcee or the homeless man. While I’m honored to pray for people when they ask, I don’t believe my prayers are any more special than anyone else’s. I’m simply a servant for God who’s been blessed to have the best job in the world.

You blog about sex and intimacy fairly regularly and are not shy of telling us how hot you think your wife is. Do you think God is OK with that? Is sex not a taboo subject? Isn’t it only the unsaved ‘unclean’ people who talk about that kind of stuff?

I laughed when someone commented on my blog recently that I have a “sexy marriage.” I’m not exactly sure what they meant, but I took it as a compliment.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not shy about the subject of sex or the relationship I have with my wife. My wife and I have a very healthy marriage and I think it’s good for people to see that a healthy, happy marriage is VERY possible in this day and age. Sex is a regular topic that I preach and teach about. Both the positives and negatives need to be shared. I personally feel that Hollywood and our society have their view of sex wrong. Through television, movies, magazines, etc Hollywood and the world preach and teach their views on sex. And so much of their message is not what we’re taught in God’s word. I feel that it’s our responsibility to try and set the story straight and to give the right view. What’s the straight story in my opinion . . .

  • That God created sex as a beautiful gift.
  • It is only to be celebrated in a marriage between a husband and wife.
  • That married people (including ministers/pastors/clergy) can have an incredibly healthy marriage and sex life.
  • That God’s way is the BEST way when it comes to marriage and sex.

I love challenging husbands and wives to meet their spouse’s most basic needs and see if their spouse doesn’t return the favor.

FYI: I have been doing marriage & family seminars for years called, “Happy Marriages equal Healthy Families.” I’m so EXCITED that Lea has now joined me in this ministry doing seminars with me. We’re now team teaching husbands and wives how to have “Happy Marriages and Healthy Families.”

You also blog about how you find humor in churchy things. Does God not get offended by that? Does he have a sense of humor?

I think Jesus had a great sense of humor. I can imagine him belly laughing as he described getting the plank out of your own eye before removing the speck from your brother’s eye. There are so many spots in scripture that I can see a sense of humor in Jesus. Yes, there is a time for seriousness, but there’s such a need for a little humor at times. AND, if I can’t laugh (or make fun) of myself then there’s something wrong with me.

What do you do to keep yourself going, to keep the fire burning? Many of us go to conferences or events and get all hyped up about our faith and then find that it wears off after a few days or weeks. Is there a special trick to keeping that going?

I have no special trick for keeping my spiritual bucket full. I try to read my bible daily, find time to spend alone, and catch a conference or a workshop. But I’m like everyone else and have times when my fires burn low. I just have to find ways to recharge. I will say one of the best things I do is subscribe through iTunes to other people’s sermons. I try to listen to them when I run, drive in the car, or in my office. It’s important for me to be fed and not just be the one that feeds others all the time.

Thank you, Trey for your time and for sharing a little of your wisdom and insight with us.

I hope that we can all learn something from this about how to walk out our faith in this world.
