My First Self-Published Book

Book 1 in the Professor Alexander's Fantastic Fieldtrips seriesIf you’ve ever been to my blog or Facebook page before, it probably hasn’t escaped your notice that I’m in the process of writing a ‘For Dummies’ book. Web Hosting For Dummies, to be precise.

Did you know though, that I also write children’s books?

That’s not particularly surprising since none of them have ever been published….. until now.

Back in 2009, when this century still felt fresh and new, my six year old daughter was in second grade at school and loved to read.

The choice of reading materials for her was a little… umm… lacking though.

It’s probably that we’re very picky parents but most of the stuff she was finding for her reading level was not exactly appropriate.

So, as normally happens with me, I decided to take matters into my own hands…. and write her some books myself.

… and I did.

….and she loved them.

….and so did all the kids who read them.

….Getting them published though was a whole different ball game. The publishers and agents I contacted definitely did NOT love them.

So I gave up.

Fast Forward

Fast forward four years though and, by the grace of God, I now have my first book contract and am beginning to garner just a glimmer of a belief that I might one day be able to be considered an author.

Yeah. I know. Crazy!

As we are coming up to Easter, it occurred to me that I have a book, the first book I wrote, in fact, sitting doing nothing, being read by no-one but which is about this very time of year.

The impending release of Web Hosting For Dummies emboldened me to start thinking that maybe someone might just want to read my children’s book to their kids and so I started the process of self-publishing it.

A Very Different School tells the story of Professor Alexander and his incredible time machine, which he uses to take his students on some very fantastic field trips. The first being a journey back in time to see what happened that first Easter.

It is a crazy feeling to see your own book for sale on Amazon and other places… and even crazier to see that Amazon lists you as the author of TWO books.

I have no idea where this is all going to take me, I know I’m no J.K. Rowling or C.S. Lewis but I also know that I enjoy writing and I truly hope that other people enjoy writing what I write.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement in bringing me this far. I just hope I can deliver books of a quality that your fabulous support deserves.

If you’d like to check out A Very Different School, book 1 in the Professor Alexander’s Fantastic Fieldtrips series, you can find out a little more about it here, here and here.

It’s available for sale through my CreateSpace page or Amazon.

It’s even available on and there should be a Kindle version out some time today, too!

About PeterP

I am a blogger, author, stay at home dad, speaker, web hosting trainer and geek (I was so excited to get an iPad that I actually made up a song and dance about it). I am English by birth, but currently live in California with my wife and our three children. I ran a web hosting business for nine years and found that many, if not most of my clients had never learned how to use any of the functions associated with hosting so I wrote a book to try and teach just those skills. I must admit to having fallen in love with WordPress (possibly a little TOO much) and I honestly find it hard to understand why anyone would use anything different to build a site! WordPress is wonderful! My passion is to help others achieve their goals with their websites/blogs. I believe that, with a little help, anyone can have an awesome site.

Great job Peter! Just wondering, who did you use to self publish. I am thinking on doing this for the ministry materials for Restoration Road.

I used CreateSpace… which seems reasonable thus far!
