What Does the Bible Say About Settling Down?

A Bedouin Tent in the Sahara DesertSince the beginning of time, mankind has been settling down wherever he finds food and water.

In Genesis Chapter 2, we see God planted a garden for Adam and Eve to live in. Somewhere for them to settle down and make their home.

In the very next chapter, after they had committed that first sin, God destined the two of them to a life of settling down outside of the garden. He banished them from the garden of Eden and said:

“Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground…”

Genesis 3:17-19

Adam was told he would have to toil to make the ground produce crops, by which we can surmise that Adam and Eve would have to settle down somewhere to take the time to toil in the fields.

So how can we reconcile the two?

Really, honestly, do you live your life as if this is a temporary home or do you hoard and collect and save up and put down deep roots?

If your answer to the above question is yes then you’re not alone. Here’s why:
