Today is Tech Tuesday on this ‘ere blog… I’ve got a couple of things I want to talk about but if you’re not interested in that stuff, why not head over to the Make A Difference To One where I have been graciously offered the chance to write a post.
Or instead, hang around here and let’s get on with today’s post:
I’ve been playing around with lots of new blog stuff lately. I’m rather a big geek so all this stuff is just way more exciting to me than it really should be!
I’ve been helping someone get their new WordPress Blog set up and it has been a steep learning curve. I’ve had a slave master cracking the whip over my head constantly changing what they want and how they want it done but I’ve learned a huge amount through it so I’m actually kind of grateful!
Since Tuesday is designated as Tech day on my blog, I thought I’d point out a few things I’ve done, maybe give you some ideas and hopefully get some feedback:
- You may be able to see to the right of this screen I have added Google Friend Connect. I really have no idea what, if anything ,this does for me but I was determined not to be the very last person on the planet to install it! What does it do for me? Anyone know?
- I’m slowly making little changes to the design… I’m going to put in a bigger rss graphic etc. What do you think? Does it need one – up there on the top right?
- The blogroll is getting unmanageable, so I’m going to make a ‘links’ page. Send me a link to your blog if you want me to add you to that page. I’ll try to add every blog I read regularly but there’s a lot so don’t be offended if I miss you, just give me a nudge to remind me!
- I added a handy-dandy WordPress plugin called WPTouch iPhone Theme, which supposedly optimises the page for people viewing the site on their cell phones. Anyone want to check it out on their phone and tell me how it’s looking?
- I also added the All-in-one SEO pack and WP Super-cache to make the site load faster and be better optimized for search engines.
- I’ve even set up the blog for Kindle users. Anyone with a Kindle can subscribe to my blog and read it right on their Kindle. See my Kindle feed here. Unfortunately, Amazon charges Kindle users 99 cents per month for the service and I’m not sure my blog is worth paying for… yet. But if you have a Kindle, check it out, it’s free for the first 14 days!
- So.. what else should I tinker with? Or should I stop tinkering and start trying to write some decent blog posts?
Hey Peter,
I enjoy the Tuesday tech post idea. I’m always a year behind, so hearing what is out there is interesting…
In any case, I check out your blog each day. Thanks Bro… Christ’s Peace and Love…
I love reading on Tuesdays, too, but it makes me so frustrated to find out how much I don’t know. My domain will expire before I get everything together enough to move. And perhaps, one day, I will write another post….
Thanks for this Peter. I need some motivation (and time)!
Motivation and time would be good for me too!
Do you want some help?
would love it – I’ll holla when I get a chunk of time and can make a list of questions. They are simple ones. Sorta like me 🙂
I would love to be included on your blog roll:

Thanks
Fr. Peter
I actually checked out your blog yesterday.
I’d be glad to add you to my blogroll.
Your blog is not the kind that I normally read, but that’s great. I just love the wondrous variety in God’s creation. Just because somethings not my cup of tea doesn’t mean it’s not completely valid and God-given!
I have considered moving to wordpress, but then I figure I have the hang of blogger, what is the advantage of moving, really?
I don’t know what google connect does for you, but now that I follow you, your post appears automatically in my dashboard. So every morning I can check my dashboard for new posts. That’s why I forget to add people to my blogroll…I go to blogs mainly from my dashboard.
I’ll try to get around to fixing my blogroll as well….
WordPress doesn’t suck like Blogger does! 🙂
Ah, the dashboard. I don’t use it, so I didn’t realize other people do… Thanks Helen. Now I know why Friend Connect is good!
Your site looks great on my phone. Very sleek and handy!
As far as google connect- it’s just another way for people to stay up with you. Not everyone knows even what RSS is or what subscribing does, but they see a “follow” button and they press it… To me, that’s the long and short of it…
Thanks Jason!
Just when I think I’m doing well, you go and show off again. Now I have to get the hubby busy getting my site up to speed!
I’m sorry (to your husband 🙂 )
you gotta add a music widget so we know what you’re listening to. Granted, you’re OLD so I might not like your type of music, haha, I’m kidding of course as you’re young and vibrant 🙂
Most of my regular blog viewers on my other blog read from RSS and subscribe through posts by email. How come you don’t have a subscribe through email link? It’s the thing to do nowadays.
Since this is a christian blog, why not jazz it up with a cross or religious symbol. and I recommend putting a link to your twitter, RSS, subscribe through email links at the top right next to each other.
I actually don’t really listen to music any more. I’m getting old and need it to be quiet when I’m writing or else I end up typing the words I’m listening to!
I’ve not been able to work out how to have a subscribe by email link. Must try that again!
Thanks for the advice/suggestions! No religious symbols on this blog though… I’m not into that stuff!
Feedburner has an easy email subscription or mailchimp.com is another easy, good one (and both are free). Worth checking out…
